Molecular biology and genetics

An intensive 2‑year, English‑taught Master’s for graduates with a BSc in Biology or related fields, offering advanced training in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and Microbiology. The programme combines strong theoretical foundations with practical research experience and welcomes students from across Europe and beyond, including Erasmus and exchange students.

Students choose between two curricula:

Molecular Life Sciences (MLS)

• Focus: Biomolecular sciences with a strong hands‑on lab component.

• Core areas: Genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and genetic manipulation of microbes, cells, and plants.

• Thesis: 2‑year research internship in a faculty lab (36 credits).

• Careers: PhD, academia/research, health sector, biotech, agrobusiness, science communication, teaching.

Molecular and Digital Biology (MDB)

• Focus: High‑throughput omics data and bioinformatics.

• Core areas: Big data analysis, genomics, pharmacogenomics, cancer genomics, advanced bioinformatics.

• Thesis: 1‑semester bioinformatics internship analyzing large omics datasets (30 credits).

• Careers: Similar to MLS, plus roles handling big data in public/private sectors and managing new molecular technologies.

Both tracks involve active participation in research groups and close interaction with faculty.

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree (≥ 3 years) in Biology, Biotechnology, or closely related life‑science fields (or an equivalent foreign qualification).

• Your degree must be judged suitable by the programme’s admissions committee; suitability is assessed from your transcript and academic background.

• Demonstrate English proficiency at least at B2 level (e.g., IELTS ≥ 6.0, TOEFL iBT ≥ 78–80, or equivalent). Some embassies may require an English certificate for visa pre‑enrollment even if the programme itself does not strictly mandate it.

• A solid background in basic Biology, especially: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology.

• If your degree is not in Biology/Biotechnology, you must show a minimum number of credits in specific scientific‑disciplinary sectors (as defined by the Italian system); the committee evaluates this from your transcript.

• Students with a suitable BSc must pass an online admission exam after the transcript evaluation.

The committee also considers your final grade / GPA and overall academic performance when assessing suitability.

• Bachelor’s degree certificate (or proof of enrolment/expected graduation if you haven’t graduated yet).

• Official academic transcript in English or Italian; if in another language, provide official translations plus certified copies.

• Copy of passport (bio page).

• Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English.

• Motivation letter / statement of purpose.

• Recommendation letters (usually two, preferably academic); referees are asked to comment on theoretical knowledge, motivation, communication skills, technical ability, and flexibility, scoring 0–5.

• English language certificate (optional for the application but recommended; may be required by some consulates for visa pre‑enrollment).

• Passport‑sized photograph (as per portal instructions).

• Application fee payment
