The Master’s Degree in Physics at the University of Ferrara is a two-year, English-taught programme designed for students who want to develop advanced knowledge in modern physics and prepare for careers in research, technology, education, and high-tech industries.

With 120 ECTS credits, the programme combines advanced theoretical courses, laboratory activities, interdisciplinary subjects, professional internships, and a substantial research-based master’s thesis. Its flexible structure allows students to tailor their study plan to their academic interests and career objectives.

Students can choose from several areas of study:

• Astrophysics and Cosmology: Explore stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter, gravitational waves, and the evolution of the universe.

• Physics Education: Develop expertise in physics teaching, science communication, laboratory education, and public outreach.

• Health, Energy and Environmental Physics: Apply physics to medical imaging, radiation, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, and sustainable technologies.

• Condensed Matter Physics: Study advanced materials, nanostructures, semiconductors, magnetic systems, sensors, and solid-state technologies.

• Fundamental Interactions: Investigate particle physics, nuclear physics, neutrinos, particle detectors, accelerators, and the forces governing matter.

• Theoretical Physics: Build mathematical and computational models related to quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, statistical physics, nuclear physics, and quantum computing.

Practical and Research-Based Learning

The programme connects classroom learning with active research and professional experience. Students may participate in laboratory projects, internships within the University of Ferrara, or placements with companies, universities, and research institutions in Italy or abroad.

The 45-credit master’s thesis provides an opportunity to work on an original research project under the supervision of an academic advisor. Research activities may involve advanced data analysis, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, medical physics, astrophysics, particle detectors, materials science, renewable energy, or theoretical modelling.

Students also complete additional educational activities, including an internship and scientific communication or public-engagement projects.

International Opportunities

The programme offers opportunities for international mobility through Erasmus+ exchanges and a competitive double-degree programme with Université Paris-Saclay. Selected students can study in both Italy and France and obtain a master’s degree from both institutions.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, a three-year university diploma, or an equivalent foreign qualification recognized as suitable for admission to the Master’s Degree in Physics at the University of Ferrara.

Applicants should meet the following academic and language requirements:

• A degree in Physical Sciences and Technologies, corresponding to class L-30 under Italian Ministerial Decree DM 270/2004 or class 25 under DM 509/1999.

• English language proficiency at a minimum level of B2.

• Applicants with a degree in another field may also be considered if they have completed the required academic credits:

  • At least 20 credits in mathematics and/or computer science.

  • At least 5 credits in chemistry.

  • At least 60 credits in physics.

  • The physics credits must include at least 9 credits in theoretical physics, models, and mathematical methods, classified under FIS/02.

  • The remaining physics credits must cover relevant disciplines within FIS/01, FIS/03, FIS/04, FIS/05, and FIS/07.

Admission is subject to an academic verification process. The admissions committee evaluates the applicant’s previous studies and submitted qualifications. Applicants may also be invited to a personal interview to assess their scientific background and language proficiency.

• For international applicants, translated and officially verified documents where required by the University of Ferrara or the relevant Italian authorities.
