Course Description

The International Master’s Degree in Advanced Automotive Engineering has its administrative headquarters at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and is jointly delivered with the Universities of Bologna, Ferrara, and Parma.

Taught entirely in English, the programme was developed with the support of leading Emilia-Romagna companies operating internationally in the automotive industry. It also receives strong backing from the Emilia-Romagna Region through the MUNER Association, which brings together universities, companies, and other organisations involved in the sector.

The programme is designed to train Vehicle Engineers—also known as Advanced Automotive Engineers—who build on a foundational knowledge of industrial engineering, particularly mechanical or mechatronic engineering. Graduates develop a comprehensive understanding of the vehicle as an integrated system and acquire the ability to design, develop, and manufacture its main subsystems. They are also prepared to manage the technological and production processes associated with premium road vehicles, motorcycles, and competition vehicles.

In collaboration with its industrial partners, the programme offers six specialised curricula. One of these is available at both the Modena and Bologna campuses:

  • Advanced Motorcycle Engineering: Focuses on the design and development of technologically advanced motorcycles for both mass production and racing. It covers the electronic engineering and industrial design challenges specific to motorcycles.

  • Advanced Powertrain: Examines the design and engineering of conventional and innovative propulsion systems, with particular attention to optimisation, control, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

  • Advanced Sportscar Manufacturing: Concentrates on the planning, development, supervision, and management of automotive production processes, with an emphasis on advanced digital technologies.

  • High-Performance Car Design: Addresses the development of the complete vehicle system, from its fundamental principles to the design of the main components and subsystems of high-performance road cars.

  • Off-Highway Vehicle Engineering: Covers the design and development of advanced off-road vehicles, with a focus on electrification and autonomous-driving technologies.

  • Racing Car Design: Focuses on the design and development of racing vehicles, with particular emphasis on aerodynamics, lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre-reinforced composites, and experimental testing.

Graduates may pursue careers in manufacturing and service companies involved in the design and production of premium and competition cars and motorcycles. They may also work across the related international supply chain, including engineering consultancies, component manufacturers, research and development departments, and production management functions.
