Sustainable Industrial Engineering
Course Description
The Master’s Degree in Sustainable Industrial Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is a two-year, English-taught programme offered by the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering. It is based in Carpi, has free access, awards 120 CFU, and belongs to the LM-33 Mechanical Engineering degree class. Teaching is delivered primarily in person.
The programme focuses on the development of sustainable, digitally connected and energy-efficient industrial systems. It combines mechanical engineering with sustainability assessment, industrial automation, artificial intelligence, energy management, advanced materials and sustainable manufacturing.
Main subjects
During the first year, students study:
-
Advanced lightweight mechanical design.
-
Composite materials and fibres engineering.
-
Dynamics of machines.
-
Energy management in industry.
-
Industrial IoT and artificial intelligence.
-
Sustainable process design.
-
Sustainable product design.
-
Theory and simulation of industrial fluid machines.
The second year includes industrial communications and control, sustainability assessment of industrial processes, sustainable manufacturing systems, an industrial traineeship or design activity, and a final examination. Students can also choose subjects such as energy audits, energy-efficient industrial robotics, resource management for sustainable production, and safety and ergonomics of industrial systems.
Practical orientation
A significant part of the second year is dedicated to practical and project-based learning. The programme includes a 9-CFU industrial traineeship or design activity and a 15-CFU final examination, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real industrial challenges.
Students learn how to evaluate and improve industrial processes from an environmental, energetic, technological and economic perspective. They may work on areas such as reducing energy consumption, improving production efficiency, integrating industrial AI and IoT systems, developing sustainable products, or designing more efficient manufacturing facilities.
Career opportunities
Graduates may pursue careers as:
-
Mechanical or industrial engineers.
-
Sustainability and energy-management specialists.
-
Manufacturing and production engineers.
-
Industrial automation and control engineers.
-
Product or process design engineers.
-
Energy auditors.
-
Consultants in industrial sustainability.
-
Specialists in Industry 4.0, industrial IoT and artificial intelligence.
-
Researchers or doctoral students in mechanical and industrial engineering.
The degree is particularly suitable for students who want to work at the intersection of mechanical engineering, industrial digitalisation and environmental sustainability. However, because it belongs to the LM-33 Mechanical Engineering class and includes subjects such as machine dynamics, fluid machines, mechanical design and composite materials, it is primarily intended for applicants with a strong engineering or mechanical-engineering background.
Eligibility
-
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in mechanical, industrial, energy, manufacturing or related engineering.
-
Strong preparation in mathematics, physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, manufacturing and industrial systems.
-
English-language proficiency.
-
Applicants with economics or business degrees may not meet the required engineering credits.
